Sometimes a Jet Charter is Not For Business or Pleasure

New Flight Charters Private Jet Sky

Subject: RE: Itinerary Change

Hello Michelle –

I wanted to take a minute to thank you for your help. By arranging this charter at a price that my family could afford, if only barely, you have given my father the opportunity to spend his final days at home. You have also given my mother the opportunity to be surrounded by a support network of family and friends when my Dad, an old solider, hears the bugler sound retreat for the last time. I am immensely grateful to you for this help.

While many of your other charters are no doubt important and likely do much to allow commerce to move forward more smoothly or allow persons of means to make the best use of their time, I doubt that on a human level very many will be as significant as this one. This, you see, is a mission of the heart. And it is these missions that give meaning to all we do and define who we are.

Unfortunately, I probably won’t need to charter many aircraft in the future. However, if the need should ever coincide with the resources, I will use your company. Otherwise, I would recommend your services without hesitation or reservation to any colleague or client.

Please feel free to share my contact information and this communication with any potential clients or in any promotional materials. You have been outstanding to work with and I wish you the very best in all of your endeavors.

Most-Recommended Private Jet Service Garnered by New Flight Charters 2011-2012

Recommended by Air Charter Professionals in Charter Industry Publication

New Flight Charters, a nationwide leader in private air charters, was the most recommende jet charter service through March, 2012 in jet charter industry resource CharterX, when the feature ended. Air charter professionals, operators and brokers had the opportunity to publicly recommend charter companies and post comments on their service, history and experiences.

Most RecommendedJackson Hole Hawker Private Jet Charter PS 314x209

New Flight Charters was the most-recommended company, receiving 15 written recommendations
in the 12-month period before the feature ended March 2012, and more than 20 formal recommendations from air charter professionals since the feature became available in 2009. Recommendations were tracked, recorded, and published as a resource for the more than one-thousand jet charter industry members. Of those companies receiving recommendations, the average number was 3.

The recommendations are currently available on the New Flight Charters website, as well as over 90 reviews of the company, volunteered by jet charter clients and passengers.

Credit for the ratings and success goes to the company’s focus and managers. “Our first priority is quality and value of each charter flight, not the profit margin,” said Rick Colson, New Flight Charters’ president. “We do whatever it takes for the customer, including flights at or below cost when in the client’s best interest for safety, aircraft or operator. We simply want the best experience each and every time.”

Veteran Charter Company

A contributing factor to the recommendations is the company’s management team - one of the most experienced in the industry. The five-member charter team features a cumulative 30 years in charter, 37 years FAA-certified experience, 88 years executive experience, 16,800 hours pilot-in-command, and includes private and commercial pilots and retired law enforcement.

Fastest Growing

In 2011 New Flight Charters was awarded for the third consecutive year to the Inc. 500|5000 list of fastest-growing U.S. businesses, and has the distinction of being the fastest-growing charter flight company since 2005, with a 332% growth in charters.

About New Flight Charters

Founded in 2003, New Flight Charters features the largest listing of charter aircraft in the U.S. and a Best Price Guarantee for each charter flight. Although the company is a charter aircraft owner it serves primarily as a private jet charter brokerage connecting clients with the best available aircraft and operators for each flight need worldwide. New Jet Charter Company Review

More than 90 charter flight company reviews are posted to the New Flight Charters website. They were voluteered by charter passengers and clients. The latest review, received this week, posted below.

To: Blake Smith
Subject: RE: System

Our flight Friday was a great experience and we will certainly call again. I just wondered how it worked. This last time I called around to people I knew since it was last minute and I think what I am learning is I only have to make one call, to you guys. Second, I wondered if plunking down some money for so many charter hours or a jet card was a better way to go vs. just booking the trips separately but it looks like separately works out ok.
I will call in the future. Good luck and have a great day. Our next trip to Chicago is September 21st;
November 3-4 in Dallas, and December 7th in Chicago. Those are on the schedule so far…

Air Charter Industry Flying "Up" in May 2012

Business aircraft flying activity last month in the U.S. increased again year-over-year, with traffic rising 1.6 percent, according to TraqPak data released yesterday by aviation services company Argus.

Notably, Part 135 charter flying moved into positive territory for the first time in 16 months, climbing by 0.9 percent from a year ago. Part 91 activity still dominated by operational category, and increased 4.3 percent from a year ago. However, activity at fractional providers appeared to worsen, falling 6.9 percent year-over-year.

Aircraft category results were positive on the lower end and negative on the higher end. Turboprop flying led the pack, climbing by 5.3 percent, while light jet charter activity rose 0.7 percent from May 2011. Midsize jet charter flying fell a scant 0.1 percent and large-cabin jet activity slid 3.1 percent.

By individual market segment, for the seventh month in a row Part 91 light and midsize jets showed the most significant year-over-year increases, at 5.9 percent and 5.6 percent, respectively. Light-jet fractional flying fell the hardest, down 12.8 percent from a year ago.

Argus TraqPak data is “serial-number-specific aircraft arrival and departure information on all IFR flights in the U.S.”

New Flight Charters Reports 34% Growth in 2011

  February 8, 2012

Continues Unprecedented Private Jet Charter Growth,  Adds Personnel
JACKSON HOLE, Wyo. – New Flight Charters, a nationwide leader in private air charters, today announced that it achieved 34% year-over-year sales growth in charters arranged for 2011, including a 27.2% growth in the number of New Flight Charters domestic U.S. flights, once again exceeding the overall private aviation industry growth of just 5% in 2011 according to data from the FAA.
New Flight Charters continues its solid growth trend and its gains in U.S. market-share.  Unprecedented in the industry, New Flight Charters has been named three consecutive years thus far to the Inc. 500 list of fastest growing private U.S. companies, which includes company performance data back to 2005.
“With any organization it ultimately comes down to the people,” said New Flight Charters president Rick Colson, “With great people as a foundation, you can produce a great product or a great service.  I am convinced we have one of the great teams in charter services, and our continued numbers and performance confirm this.”
In 2011 New Flight Charters became the most recommended U.S. charter service, in the world’s largest marketplace for air charter professionals, CharterX/Avinode.
New Flight Charters reports an increase in repeat clientele as well as first time charter fliers, and added full-time personnel in 2011 in support of the charter increases.  Last month New Flight Charters issued a detailed report on the most popular charter aircraft chosen in 2011.
Light Jets were by far the most popular size chartered in 2011, and were almost half (44.6%) of all charters.  Midsize Jets accounted for 21.1% of charters during 2011.  Turboprops were the third most popular category, at 20.1% of all charters.   A full detail report on the most popular private jet charter aircraft chartered in 2011 by size, type and model is posted at www.newflightcharters.com.
About New Flight Charters

New Flight Charters Reports Most Popular Private Jets & Aircraft for 2011

  January 18, 2012

New Flight Charters Reports Most Popular Private Jets & Aircraft for 2011

Light and Midsize Private Jets Strong Compared To Large Cabin Jet Charters

In a year that saw worldwide private jet charter demand make modest but fluctuating gains, U.S.-based leader New Flight Charters reports the most popular aircraft chosen for charter flights in 2011 along with its strong increase in charter flight business.
Data is from the company’s 2011 North America charter activity, including 1,105 separate flights with 587 charters, which showed notable increases of 27.2% and 16.9% respectively over prior year results.
Along with a notable increase in business – mostly in light and midsize jets – those who chartered private aircraft in 2011 on average flew more flight legs in their trip itinerary.   This 2011 increase in charter bookings and flight activity bodes well compared to prior years and lends an optimistic outlook for 2012 air charter business.
Light Jets were by far the most popular size chartered in 2011, and were almost half (44.6%) of all charters.   In listing the top five most popular light jets, tied for first were the Citation V/Ultra (19.1% of light jets) and the Beechjet 400/Hawker 400XP (19.1%), followed by the Learjet 35 (14.5%), Citation II (11.1%) and Westwind I/II (9.2%).
Midsize Jets accounted for 21.1% of charters during 2011.   The top five most popular midsize jets were the Hawker 800A at 20.2% followed by the Hawker 800XP (18.5%), Learjet 60 (16.1%), Learjet 55 (15.3%) and the Citation Excel (5.5%).   As a make overall, all Hawker models combined were chosen for almost half (46.8%) of midsize jet charters.  Midsize Learjets as a whole were 33.9% of the category’s jet charter activity.
Turboprops were the next most popular category, at 20.1% of all charters.   Beechcraft King Airs, by far the most popular chosen, accounted for 72.0% of turboprop charters.   The Pilatus PC-12 was second at 12.7% and Piper Cheyenne third at 3.4%.   King Air aircraft have been in production for over 40 years and have much greater charter availability, and thus charter results compared to the Pilatus PC-12.
The remaining aircraft categories were notably smaller portions of 2011 charters; Large Cabin Jets at 5.8%, Piston aircraft with 5.3%, and Super-Midsize jets with 3.1% rounded out the 2011 results.
Recent Market Trend
The popularity of certain aircraft models chosen confirm a trend to more relatively economical aircraft in 2011, a result of the condition of the US economy.   Proven legacy models, such as the Learjet 35 and Citation II light jets, and the Learjet 55 midsize jet, showed high charter demand and availability.
Many who fly privately may not have the same means to fly they did several years ago, but still desire the ease and freedom of private charter, and cost is a greater factor today in making those arrangements.   The strength of the Light and Midsize jet segments, when compared to luxury large cabin jets, further confirm this market trend.

Care should be taken when comparing numbers and model popularity.  Numbers of each model available for charter across the country are not equal.  The number of particular models vary and will affect the model's frequency of charter.  For example, if there are many more Learjet 35's available for charter across the U.S. than Citation CJ2's, the availability and cost of the Learjet 35 by comparison will be more favorable.

New Flight Charters Named in Article on Private Jet Service

New Flight Charters and Charter Manager Nanette Poorman are noted in current newspaper article highlighting one of our private jet operators:

Minneapolis StarTribune
Article by: David Phelps

Charter Firm Gains Altitude
Red Wing Regional Airport is a sleepy collection of aircraft hangars on the Wisconsin side of the Mississippi River, three miles from the Goodhue County seat.
But inside the largest of those hangars is the headquarters for Red Wing Aeroplane Co., a growing airline charter service that counts captains of industry, Hollywood celebrities, sports stars and country western artists among its clientele.
It has gone from one to five eight-seat Cessna Citation jets since 2005 with plans for up to 15 more planes in the next three to five years, an expansion that would allow it to list Hawaii and far-flung Western Hemisphere locales as destination points.
In a flat industry, Red Wing Aeroplane is slowly building market share.
"Our service is the new first class for the airline industry. You can have anything you want but there's a cost involved and there's no free ride," said Wes Converse, who co-founded the original aircraft maintenance company of the same name with his dad, Bob, in 1990. "We're safe, reliable and on time."
These are not the strongest times for charter services and business aviation in general. When the economy tanks, so does business travel.
From the start of the Great Recession in 2008 until it officially ended in 2010, flight hours in the business travel industry were down 35 to 40 percent, said Dan Hubbard, senior vice president of the National Business Aviation Association. While business has improved, Hubbard said it's still 10 to 15 percent below the peak in 2007.
But Red Wing Aeroplane has developed a niche that is somewhat immune from the economy. That involves passengers who have the wherewithall to use a charter service and avoid the current-day hassles of commercial travel.
"This is a service industry and you have to set yourself apart from your competition," Converse said. "Passengers at the airport are miserable. They have to go through a security line and everyone accepts that and you'll probably be late. In our business it's always assumed you'll be on time, the aircraft will be clean and the crew hospitable."
In the charter business, operators get much of their traffic through brokers. A client calls a broker and says "I want to go from point A to point B" on a certain date. The broker posts that assignment on an electronic bulletin board and charter carriers bid on the trip. Sometimes the trips are planned in advance; sometimes they are last-minute.
One of the jet charter brokers that frequently uses Red Wing Aeroplane is New Flight Charters based in Jackson Hole, Wyo.
"We've been using them for at least six years," said New Flight's Nanette Poorman. "They're always available [to make a quote]. It's the smartest thing they do."
Converse said the Red Wing Aeroplane operations office is staffed from 7 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. seven days a week and that someone is always available to take calls after those hours.
Poorman said Red Wing Aeroplane's flight crews are generally experienced, with specialized training in mountain flying [think high-end ski resorts], inclement weather and short runways.
Converse is diligent about not identifying clients. But a Web page for New Flight Charters gives an idea of the types of people who fly charter. Among endorsements from dozens of satisfied New Flight customers is the office of former President Bill Clinton, the travel coordinator for former Mexican President Vicente Fox, an assistant to Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, and comedian Kathy Griffin.
"We fly all kinds of people," Converse said. "We fly corporate executives, sports figures, celebrities, average people. Of the Who's Who, we've flown most of them."
Charter flights take Red Wing aircraft to both coasts, up and down the eastern seaboard, into the Caribbean and into South America and Canada.
Converse said Red Wing Aeroplane is "a floating fleet" that comes back to the headquarters hangar only for maintenance. "The whole idea is to not fly an airplane empty," he said.
Converse said Red Wing will cater to the needs or whims of its passengers. He said one regular traveler needs bottled Evian water on each trip, along with a New York Times. A country-and-western singer and his manager ordered $2,000 work of liquor for a flight from Washington, D.C., to Nashville.
"Whatever they want, they'll get it, but they'll have to pay for it," Converse said.
According to aircharterguide .com, the hourly price for Red Wing's aircraft ranges from $2,000 to nearly $2,600.  { blog editor's note; New Flight Charters presents jet charter directory listings along with jet charter prices }
Converse said a trip from Minneapolis to Miami would cost about $12,000. "That's more than a commercial ticket, but that's not my clientele," he said.
Converse and his 81-year-old dad, both of whom live in the Red Wing area, have more than 80 combined years in aviation.
Bob Converse was an Air Force flight mechanic who served in the Korean War and later spent 30 years as a mechanic for Braniff, Western and Delta Air Lines. Wes Converse also is an Air Force veteran and flew for Comair, a Delta regional carrier, and Evergreen International, a freight carrier.
In 1990, they created Red Wing Aeroplane as a maintenance facility and morphed into a charter service 15 years later.
Today, Red Wing has 40 employees, including nearly 20 pilots operating 120 to 150 flights a month.
The success of the company is not lost on Bob Converse, who still comes to work every day.
"We've been lucky," he said. "But it's been a lot of hard work."

Compare Private Jet Charter Hourly Rates:

Typical hourly jet charter rates:
  • Light Jets $2,200 - $2,600
  • Midsize Jets $3,200 - $3,800
  • Super Mid Jets $4,300 - $4,800
  • Large Cabin Jets $4,700 - $7,600
Compare this to hourly jet card rates of $5,000 - $6,000 in a Light Jet, and it is clear that jet charter empty leg or one-way pricing is such a value.  The consideration with jet cards is their rates and flights are guaranteed (within their terms), whereas an empty leg may depend on a corresponding flight depending on the operator's situation in needing to move an aircraft and their private jet listing.  However the cost difference is a little more than double.  Some empty legs or one-way flights may be guaranteed also, depending on the flight's operator.  So an empty leg or one-way charter can be had at a huge savings if you are comfortable with the flights terms and your broker's experience and capabilities.

View the Empty Legs Resource Guide.  Founded in 2003, New Flight Charters is one of the largest and most successful jet charter brokerages, and boasts one of the most experienced teams in private jet charter.

Jet Charter Flight Rates with Empty Legs or One-Way Discounts

An Informational Resource on Jet Charter Rates and Pricing with Empty Legs, One-Ways and Traditional Air Charter

To those searching for private air charter flights, much emphasis is made in internet advertising about discounted one-way flights or "empty legs" - private jets that are already flying a certain direction and can be had for pennies on the dollar.
While that may be a bit overstated and an advertising hook to lure you in, there is usually a defininte, and sometimes significant, cost advantage in taking advantage of a discounted offer.  This is provided, of course, that your flight need is only one way, or your round trip flights are many days apart and a traditional charter aircraft would need to make two round trips to accomplish it.

Actually connecting with a private jet empty leg can be a rare event because the schedules and flight routes are very specific.  If you ask the airplane to deviate too far from its needed route, or if you need the flight on a different day or time, or if you need/prefer a different size or type aircraft, you may be better off with other charter options.

Booking an empty leg listing is typically a non-cancellable affair, since the airplane needs to make that flight in a certain time frame and is counting on your fare.  Other charter options are usually fully cancelable up to 72, 48 or even 24 hours before the flight.  Be sure to get your cancellation details and check your charter quote paperwork.
Most often, one-way flight charters at a discount are best accomplished utilizing operators' floating fleets - aircraft that can be quoted and flown on a point-to-point basis - with better pricing than a traditional charter aircraft returning to base.
Exploring all your flight options, or using a quality and experienced jet charter broker, will provide you with the full jet charter listings of flight alternatives, aircraft and quotes to choose from.

Below are a sampling of actual charters that were booked within the past month.  The chart shows the aircraft and price chosen compared to a traditional charter quote.

Flight Routing

Aircraft Used

Price Paid

Traditional Charter Quote

Belmar NJ - Palm Beach FLCitation Excel, midsize jet$10,593$18,650
Teterboro NJ - Ft Laudersale FLLearjet 60, midsize jet$10,023$19,250
Oakland CA - New Orleans LAHawker 800XP, midsize jet$23,962$34,625
Sacramento CA - Portland MECitation X, super-mid jet$27,638$64,350
Carlsbad CA - Vancouver BCCitation V, light jet$12,483$15,850
Teterboro NJ - Miami FLLearjet 55, midsize jet$9,950$16,500
Washington DC - Houston TXWestwind, light jet$6,270$16,880
Pittsburgh PA - Salt Lake City UTFalcon 10, light jet$17,948$22,687
Van Nuys CA - Lihue, HawaiiGulfstream IV, large jet$39,910$69,575
Prices listed are all-inclusive; taxes, fees, etc.
Those looking for a one way charter flight who are lured by advertised private jet empty legs for "pennies on the dollar", "make an offer!" or "cheap-cheap-cheap", may be disappointed when they are finally offered actual availability, terms or pricing.  However, very good pricing can be had for many routings by those with realistic expectations and by using expert, long term and reputable air charter brokers.

Stay tuned to this column for a coming article and resource on evaluating and selecting quality air charter brokers.

Private Jet Charter Demand Increases for First Quarter 2011

Commentary-
This News and Press Release was distributed nationwide and online yesterday April 28.  Private Air Charter activity has continued to improve significantly through first quarter 2011.  The notable trend from the prior quarter continues.  Large cabin jet Gulfstream and Challenger charter demand dominates the increase in flight activity.
From Marketwire Private Jet News

Private Jet Charter Demand Increases for First Quarter 2011

Demand for Large Cabin Private Jets Increases Significantly Over 2010

JACKSON HOLE, WY--(Marketwire - Apr 28, 2011) – U.S. private jet charter industry leader New Flight Charters reports flight activity for the first quarter of 2011 increased 37.0% over 2010. The company arranged 248 flights during the quarter, over 181 flights for the same period in 2010.

A notable increase came in the number of large jet charters, including Gulfstreams, Challengers and Falcons, which increased 278% over 2010 and represented 14% of total charter flights for the quarter. Charters with other size aircraft were up 20.1% overall and proportionally remained constant. All aircraft sectors increased, with the large jet category up exponentially.

Costs for large jet charters averaged $45,924 overall for the quarter and included flights to/from Europe, the Caribbean and Hawaii. Leisure flights were the primary type of charter.

"Large jets are back to pre-recession numbers," said New Flight Charters president Rick Colson, "Family vacations internationally were a large reason, specifically to the Caribbean." The typical large jet trip was 8-11 family members flying more than 5 hours to the Caribbean for a week's vacation. Flights were from the nearest local airport, and non-stop each way, with over-flight privileges from US Customs, making it extremely convenient and easy for large families to travel internationally.

About New Flight Charters

Since 2003 the aviation experts at New Flight Charters have arranged the leading values in private jet charter. New Flight Charters has experienced record growth and was named to the Inc. 5000 in 2009 and 2010, making it the fastest growing U.S. air charter service over the past five years.
